parents

Deaths and injuries as a result of road crash have now reached epidemic
proportions around the world.

Every 3 minutes somewhere in the world a child dies as the result of road ‘accident’.

That’s nearly 500 children wiped out every single day and thousands more injured and left in pain. This will rise in future years as road deaths in poorer countries particularly are set to rise by another 80% by the year 2020.

How you as a parent can help.

For most of us, using roads is something we do everyday and we accept them as part of our lives.  It probably never crosses your mind that it could happen to you or your family but tragically it could. The thought of a relative or loved one being killed or severely injured whilst using the road is something that does not bear thinking about but just imagine if it were your son or daughter.

In Great Britain in 2005, 3201 people were killed as the result of an ‘accident’ on the road; 671 of these victims were just doing something we do every day - they were ‘only’ crossing the road.

63 of these victims were children, crossing the road, in many cases it would have been in the street very close to where they lived. These fatal accidents generally occur in quiet roads very close to where children live and play.

You personally can add your voice and help the campaign for global road safety

  • sign up on the web at www.makeroadssafe.org
  • do your bit and set a good example at the earliest point in life, as soon as a child is able understand simple messages and instructions from us as adults.

It is never too early to begin to start to help children form safer attitudes and behaviours, becoming safe and confident road users as pedestrians, cyclists, passengers and, in the future, drivers.

It is therefore important that we as adults set a good example from the start.

  • When out and about with your child always practise safe road behaviour.
  • Discuss the behaviour of passing drivers, cyclists and bus drivers.
  • Always look for safer crossing places and use them
  • Talk about Holding hands, Listening and Looking when on or near the road.
  • Try Walking to School as healthy option and discussing traffic situation and safe crossing places. It is considered a child who walks to school is more alert and therefore more open to learning.
  • As drivers discuss why they need to wear a seat belt to protect them and keep them safe.
  • Talk about the speed of other vehicles and how difficult it is for them to stop quickly.

The activities on this website Fantabulous International Adventures website are designed to be engaging and fun.  The first activity uses the animal world to deliver the key road safety message.  Subsequent activities bring the activities into the real world.

The fun activities will help you in delivering very serious messages to your child/children that in the real world roads are dangerous if not used carefully.

By the time you have read this page another child will have died on the road somewhere in the world.
