Deaths and injuries as a result of road crashes have now reached epidemic proportions.
Every 3 minutes somewhere in the world a child dies as the result of road ‘accident’.
That’s nearly 500 children wiped out every single day and thousands more injured and left in pain. This will rise in future years as road deaths in poorer countries particularly are set to rise by another 80% by the year 2020.
You personally can add your voice and help the campaign for global road safety on two fronts:-

- If you don’t already incorporate road safety education into class topics, consider building some lessons around the issue. Materials are downloadable from the website. Road Safety Education is very flexible and can be made to fit into most curriculum themes, and we give some guidance below.
It is never too early to begin to start to form and mould the attitudes and beliefs of our children and make them into safe and confident road users as pedestrians, cyclists, passengers and, in the future, drivers.
How you as their teachers can help.
In Great Britain in 2005, 3201 people were killed as the result of an ‘accident’ on the road; 671 of these victims were just doing something we do every day - they were ‘only’ crossing the road.
The same number of children you teach in your class at school are killed on the roads each year.
They may have attended your school and they may even have been children of someone you know.
Even more tragically they could have been your own children.
To assist in preventing these tragedies it is vitally important that we equip children right from the start with the necessary skills. You as their teacher have a vitally important role to play in this crucial life skill for the children you teach.
How to use.
Access www.makeroadssafe.org and click under the Zebra’s Fantabulous International Journey to begin a voyage of discovery for both you and your pupils using the game as a stimulus to start the interest and build awareness of road safety issues.
This can be done by your class making use of the follow up activities and downloadable materials from the website. You can use your classroom interactive whiteboards for class or group work, or the children can work in pairs or individually on their computers.
- Start discussing road safety issues at a young age, before attitudes form, can build long term safer behaviour. You as a teacher are ideally placed to begin this learning process.
- The material from this website can be utilised for Literacy lessons, Personal Safety, Health education and Citizenship Issues and of course IT skills, as well as Geography, History, Science, Music and Art.

How does this fit into the curriculum?

Science – look at different road surfaces throughout the world in terms of stopping distances and skidding.
Mathematics – investigate why the history of the automobile and the positive and negative issues that it brought with it.
